Phil Jones will miss England's friendly against Germany on Tuesday night because of a groin injury he sustained in Friday's 2-0 defeat by Chile.
The 21-year-old Manchester United defender was replaced just before the hour mark by club-mate Chris Smalling.
The Football Association confirmed that, following a scan on Saturday, Jones had returned to his club.
His United team-mates Michael Carrick and Danny Welbeck have already been ruled out through injury.
Having picked a 28-man squad to begin with, England boss Roy Hodgson still has plenty of options for the Germany game.
He is hopeful Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker will recover from his injury in time.
Skipper Steven Gerrard and forwards Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert, who all missed the Chile match through injury, will be assessed when they report back to England's base in Watford on Sunday.
Joe Hart, Ashley Cole and Andros Townsend are also expected to return to the starting XI.
