Chelsea travel to the DW Stadium on Sunday for a clash between two sides who had spectacular finishes to last season. The Blues celebrated UEFA Champions League and FA Cup glory in May and Roberto Di Matteo was rewarded with a permanent contract as manager. But the Premier League will be where the Italian’s interest must lie this season, as a sixth-placed finish last term was their lowest since the 2001/02 season. Wigan staged a great escape in the final couple of months to climb out of the drop zone and secure survival, eventually, quite comfortably. Roberto Martinez was once again linked with a move away from the club earlier in the summer but ended up staying and he will be hoping to establish his men as a more competitive force right from the off this time around.
• Wigan have lost just one of their last eight Premier League games at the DW Stadium and won the last four in a row.
• Chelsea have not begun a league season with defeat since 1998, when they were beaten 2-1 at Coventry.
