Chester FC 1 Northwich Victoria 1 -

Chester FC Crowned champions

Evostik league record crowd flocks to see Chester FC become Champions!

Neil Young made four changes for the top of the table clash with second placed Northwich Victoria. Antoni Sarcevic, Iain Howard, Michael Wilde and Alex Brown returned to the starting lineup in place of Chris Simm, Ashley Williams, Jerome Wright and Robbie Booth.

The game started with both teams trying to find a foothold, possession was regularly exchanged between the two clubs with the visitors possibly having more of the ball in the first ten minutes, without testing Glennon.

The first change of the game went Chester's way though as a Wes Baynes ball into the box fell to Iain Howard, who shot low but too close to Hinchcliffe who was able to parry away, from the resulting Matty McGinn throw George Horan's header was caught by Hinchcliffe.

With the defences winning the battle against their striking counterparts chances were at a premium and after twenty seven minutes Wes Baynes conceeded a free kick on the edge of the Chester area, Nathan Woolfe stepped up to take it but Glennon got a hand to it to push it away for a corner.

The two teams continued to cancel each other out, although a few crosses in from Chester were turned over by Vics defenders there were no other efforts on target. At half time both teams were deadlocked at 0-0.

Two minutes into the second half and Northwich took the lead, a free kick from just inside the Chester half was taken by Tom Field, Dom Collins got on the end of it and his headed hit the post, Kyle Armstrong was quickest to the rebound and poked it home to give the visitors the lead.

Chester's best chance of the game came on the hour mark as a Matty McGinn corner found George Horan but the captain's header was blocked on the line and cleared away.

Northwich were looking the better side, with Chester's main threat coming from corners. In the seventy eighth minute Chris Simm was brought down after being caught by Ian Kearney, Kearney had been booked earlier for a foul on Iain Howard in the first half, the referee showed a second yellow and Kearney was sent for an early bath. Chester had ten minutes plus injury time to try and take advantage of having the extra man.

Chester were able to make the advantage count and with four minutes of normal time left they found an equaliser through a Matty McGinn screamer. McGinn picked the ball up on the left wing, cut inside and struck a fierce effort from twenty five yards into the top corner. A goal that is worthy of winning any league.

Chester came close again with a sweeping move but the ball was taken off Michael Powells foot and when it found Michael Wilde his shot was saved by Ben Hinchcliffe.

As the full time whistle blew the record crowd errupted and Chester FC were crowned Evostik Premier Division Champions!!!

Chester FC: Neil Young pride at leading Blues to back-to-back titles
Apr 9 2012 by Paul Wheelock, Chester Chronicle

AN EMOTIONAL Neil Young spoke of his pride after leading Chester FC to back-to-back titles.

Young’s side were crowned the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division champions today after they drew 1-1 with nearest rivals Northwich Victoria at a sold-out Exacta Stadium.

And there was no one happier than the Blues boss.

Young said: “It’s an unbelievable achievement but it’s not just about myself. Me and Gary Jones hooked up together four years ago now and we’ve had a play-off final defeat and three promotions.

“I was asked a question when the people from Chester first came to visit me and that was, ‘would I be able to get the club out of the North West Counties?’ I believed I could but now I’m standing here two years later – and having invoked a two-year contract, which is good – with two championships at the next level up is unbelievable.

“It’s also quite emotional as we do put a lot of work in.

“All credit to the players, they have been absolutely fantastic. I am a taskmaster and I don’t smile very often but I want to give them all the credit in the world as they’ve been absolutely tremendous this season.”

Chester needed just a single point to secure top spot and end the challenge of second-placed Northwich.

But they left it late to get the draw they required as top scorer Matty McGinn netted a wonderful 85th-minute equaliser.

Young said: “It was an unbelievable goal and Matty’s got that quality.

“When he cut inside I thought he was going to cross it but then he’s hit it. It was a fantastic finish and cue delirium.”

Young also had words of consolation for Vics, who remain 11 points behind the Blues going into the final three games of the season.

Young said: “Northwich are a good side and they’ve got some excellent players. They’re proud and they didn’t want to see us celebrating on the pitch, so fair play to them.

“Tom Field got a bit of stick coming back to his former club but he congratulated all the players and he was stood outside clapping them in.

“Football is all about rivalry but you’ve got to take your hat off to Northwich as they’ve gone hammer and tong with us all season. But I just think we’ve just been that much better and consistent, especially over the last 10 games. But they are going to be a force in the play-offs and I’m sure the other teams in the play-offs will not want to play them.”

Chester FC: Blues crowned the league champions
Apr 9 2012 by Paul Wheelock, Chester Chronicle

CHESTER FC are the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division champions!

The Blues, roared on by an incredible club record 5,009 crowd, sealed their second straight title and automatic promotion to the Blue Square North by drawing 1-1 at home to nearest rivals Northwich Victoria.

Second-placed Vics opened the scoring in the 47th when former Chester midfielder Kyle Armstrong headed home from close range.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute when centre-back Ian Kearney was shown a second yellow card.

And five minutes later Neil Young's men got the goal that ensured they claimed the championship.

What a goal it was, too, as top scorer Matty McGinn cut inside on to his left foot and hammered home from 25 yards.

Chester FC - Champions

Premier Division

Comment 0 Share 0 Tweet 0 14 hours ago | Tom Snee Zoom Chester FC are celebrating this evening after securing the Premier Division title with a 1-1 draw against Northwich Victoria at the Exacta Stadium.

A club record crowd of 5,009 witnessed the club's second successive promotion since reforming in 2010, as a late Matthew McGinn goal earned Chester the point they needed to attain an unassailable lead at the top of the division.

Only Luton Town's 6,003 crowd for their game with Hayes and Yeading surpassed Chester's attendance on Monday afternoon, which was also higher than that of several Football League clubs.

The Evo-Stik NPL wishes to congratulate Chester FC on their success
