Chester beaten 3-2 by Ebbsfleet

Posted on: Sat 14 Jan 2012

Chester FC put up a brave fight against Blue Square Premier League side Ebbsfleet United at Stonebridge Road, but lost 3-2 in the end, and the dream of a trip to Wembley is over for this year as their FA Carlsberg Trophy journey ended over 220 miles away from home.

Matty McNeil and a deflected effort by Jamie Rainford gave hope for Chester after slipping both 2-0 and 3-1 behind, but the hosts wound the clock down to leave Chester just short of gaining what would have been a deserved replay at the Exacta.

Chester made three changes for the long trip down to Ebbsfleet, Liam Brownhill and Levi Mackin came into the side to replace the suspended Wes Baynes and Michael Powell respectively. The other change was a chance for Jamie Rainford, recently on loan at FC Halifax, coming in to replace Robbie Booth.

Chester started the brighter of the two teams and in the seventh minute Matty McGinn's corner was flicked on by the inform Matty McNeil at the near post and cleared off the line and out for another corner which came to nothing.

Chester continued to press and the lively looking Jamie Rainford, in his first start since returning to the club got himself into a good position after a strong run down the left, unfortunately he slipped and his shot went wide as a result. Minutes later and Chester had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down as George Horan appeared to be brought down inside the area.

Ebbsfleet still looked good on the counter and in the 26th minute they took the lead, taking advantage of some poor defending and Calum Willock heading home at the near post, with Danby only able to get a hand to it.

'Fleet started to grow more confident and Michael West got in behind the defence but put his shot wide of Danby's left hand post.

Chester were still having the lion's share of possession and after Matty McGinn won the ball at left back, he ran at the Ebbsfleet defence before playing a sublime ball through to Jamie Rainford, Rainford shot on the turn and Preston Edwards made a superb save with his legs.

On the stroke of half time Nathaniel Pinney broke free of the Chester defence and shot low to Danby's left and the Chester 'keeper made a strong save with his legs.

Chester certainly looked the equals of the Blue Square Premier team in the first half, having lots of possession in dangerous positions and were unfortunate to go in 1-0 down at the break.

Ebbsfleet started the better of the two sides after the interval and goal-scorer Willock nearly doubled his tally for the day, after holding off pressure from Horan and Taylor he turned and Danby made a smart save with his legs.

Ebbsfleet doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half, Michael West's free kick found Yado Mambo at the back post who headed in from close range.

Five minutes later and Chester nearly had a way back into the game, with the ball bouncing round the Ebbsfleet box, the ball broke to Mackin who's header came back off the underside of the bar. As Ebbsfleet tried to clear Antoni Sarcevic was fouled. Alex Brown's free kick was beautifully weighted to find Matty McNeil, the 35 year old post man's diving header bouncing in off the far post.

In what had become a fantastic cup tie Ebbsfleet took a two goal lead again, with the impressive Michael West's shot saved by Danby and Ricky Shakes following up to roll the ball under Danby, Christian Smith came close to clearing it off the line but it was then hammered home anyway.

Chester didn't let their heads drop and with Alex Brown rolled the ball to another substitute, Iain Howard, his ball in was contested by McNeil but fell to Jamie Rainford, Rainford hit it from just inside the area, his shot took a deflection and beat Edwards.

A minute later and the game was nearly level, with the ball bouncing in the Ebbsfleet area Alex Brown hit a shot with the outside of his right foot and it landed onto the roof of the net.

Ebbsfleet nearly restored their two goal advantage as Michael West's shot from the edge of the area took a deflection and was well parried by John Danby, Nathanial Pinney capitalised on the rebound and turned Horan before blazing over the bar from close range.

Chester were very nearly level with five minutes to play, Young's final substitute, Michael Wilde flicked a shot straight at the 'Fleet 'keeper after a ball from Levi Mackin was allowed to bounce in the box.

In the end Ebbsfleet were able to see out the game and our dreams of a trip to Wembley are over for this season. Chester certainly looked a better side in the second half when Alex Brown started to get on the ball. A defeat is a difficult result to accept, especially after doing so well for so long in the game, but in the end Ebbsfleet were better in the air and capitalised at set pieces.

The support received by the fans was nothing sort of exceptional, and reflected in the fact that this was Ebbsfleet's third highest attendance of the season, behind Luton and their opening game. If this is anything to go by for future games, this and next season, then the future is very bright indeed. Chester certainly looked the equal of the Blue Square Premier outfit, and the highest of praise was awarded by Radio Kent who described Chester as the "best team to visit Stonebridge Road all season".
