Manchester City’s title challenge has hit the buffers in recent weeks after failing to win any of their last four on the road. They have tightened up at the back, though, with their 3-0 league victory over Liverpool coinciding with a fourth clean sheet in five games. Wigan’s home form has prevented them from escaping the bottom three, where they are without a win in eight games. Roberto Martinez’s men have drawn three of their last five, including holding top six outfits Chelsea and Liverpool to a point at the DW Stadium. The Latics have lost two of their last three, leaking 11 goals in the process.
Albert Crusat is back in contention for Wigan having been missing with a back injury, while Callum McManaman could be on the bench after impressing Roberto Martinez in the otherwise disappointing FA Cup defeat at Swindon. Mohamed Diame is on African Cup of Nations duty with Senegal.
David Platt, the Manchester City assistant manager, has confirmed he expects David Silva to be fit for the trip to the DW Stadium. Silva is currently back in Spain having treatment on his ankle but scans revealed there was no major damage. It is expected he will train tomorrow. Mario Balotelli (ankle) is doubtful, whilst Vincent Kompany serves the second game of a four-match ban.
