James Collins is hoping to recover from the knee problem that forced him to withdraw from the Wales squad in midweek – James Tomkins is set to step in alongside Winston Reid if he fails to make it. Sam Allardyce could hand Stewart Downing a debut after he joined from Liverpool in midweek, while Modibo Maiga look in the driving seat for the lone forward role if, as expected, Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem.

Andreas Cornelius remains a doubt for the Bluebirds with an ankle injury sustained in training, with Fraizer Campbell expected to continue as the lone forward if the Dane fails to recover in time. Matthew Connolly played the full 90 minutes at right-back in last weekend’s friendly win over Athletic Bilbao – raising questions over new boy John Brayford’s starting role. Elsewhere in defence, 18-year-old Declan John should step in for the suspended Andrew Taylor at left-back, while Ben Turner and Mark Hudson will battle it out to partner Steven Caulker in the heart of the back-four. New signing Gary Medel looks set for a debut in the centre of the park alongside Peter Whittingham and Kim Bo-Kyung.
