West Ham head into this one having collected their first away point of the season in last weekend’s goalless draw at Norwich. Sam Allardyce’s side have made a strong start to life back in the Premier League and have lost just one of their opening four matches. West Ham sit in eighth spot in the table and victory on Saturday could lift them into the top four for 24 hours at least. Sunderland make the trip to east London still searching for their first Premier League victory of the season after drawing their opening three games. Despite being unbeaten so far this season, manager Martin O'Neill is keen to get his side off to winning ways, but they have will to improve their creativity having averaged five shots per game this season, fewer than any other team in the top flight.
• All seven of the goals netted by Sunderland and West Ham in the Premier League this season have been scored in the first half of games.
Andy Carroll and Jack Collison are the only two unavailable for Sam Allardyce as West Ham prepare to welcome Sunderland to Upton Park. Joey O’Brien could continue at left-back ahead of George McCartney, while Matt Jarvis could be set to start on the left of the front three in place of Matt Taylor.

Martin O’Neill has admitted Carlos Cuellar is “very unlikely” to feature after the centre-half picked up a hamstring problem last weekend against Liverpool. Cuellar’s absence would afford Titus Bramble a chance alongside John O’Shea in the heart of defence, while O’Neill’s only other injury worry – aside from long-term absentees – is Adam Johnson. The winger continues to struggle with a thigh injury and is rated “touch and go”; Seb Larsson is primed to continue out wide, with Jack Colback covering for the Swede in central midfield.
