On May 11th 1968 Manchester City clinched the league title at Newcastle United. Will the 44-year wait to lift the trophy again finally end under the shadow of the Gallowgate End? Or will this intriguing run-in take another tortuous twist? City have regained their form just in time. Back to their best at Norwich, they were also patient against Manchester United and defensively resilient throughout. City’s faltering away form since the start of 2012 was much improved in April with two wins from their last three games on the road.
Newcastle, though, are still fighting for a place in the top four this season and bounced back from a terrible afternoon at Wigan to overcome Chelsea at Stamford Bridge thanks to two outstanding goals from Papiss Cisse, the second a contender for goal of the season. They are undefeated in their last nine league home matches and have kept a clean sheet in the last four. The last time they kept five clean sheets in a row at home in the top flight was in 1919.
• Newcastle have picked up just four points from losing positions this season - only Manchester United have a worse record in the top flight.
• Their 14 goals from corners is more than any side has managed in the Premier League this season.
Cheick Tiote is fit to play despite having to be stretchered off on Wednesday night against Chelsea with a head injury that required stitches. Danny Simpson missed the match at Stamford Bridge and will face a late fitness test. Elsewhere, changes are unlikely and Pardew will be toying with the idea of keeping the 4-4-2 that won at Stamford Bridge, rather than reverting to the 4-3-3 which had served him so well this season.
Manchester City's Joe Hart is having extensive treatment on a foot injury he sustained against Manchester United. If Hart is passed fit, manager Roberto Mancini is likely to select the same XI that started Monday's win over United.
