Everton return from the international break looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season. A 2-0 defeat at West Brom remains the only black mark against the Toffees’ perfect start to the season after impressive wins over Manchester United, Aston Villa and Leyton Orient. David Moyes’ side had the second-best home defence in the Premier League last season but will have their work cut out against the Magpies. Newcastle lost just one of their five Monday fixtures last season and will be hoping to return to winning ways after dropping points against Chelsea and Aston Villa. Alan Pardew’s side picked up eight wins on the road last season, but have only taken all three points in one of the last eight meetings at Goodison Park.
• Everton have made more defensive clearances (114) than any other team in the Premier League after three match days.
• Since the start of last season, Newcastle have conceded the joint-most penalties in the top flight (10, along with Wigan).
David Moyes will be without Darron Gibson for the visit of Newcastle. He sustained a thigh strain in the defeat at West Brom and is expected to be out for two to three weeks as a result. On a more positive note, Moyes has no other injury concerns with Steven Pienaar expected to have recovered from the thigh complaint that kept him out of international duty with South Africa to take his place in the starting lineup.

Alan Pardew will make the testing trip to Goodison on Monday with a string of defensive injuries. Keeper Tim Krul has been ruled out with an elbow injury, while right-back Danny Simpson is also missing with a hamstring problem sustained against Villa last time out. They may be joined on the sidelines by Fabricio Coloccini, who returned from the Argentina camp with a hamstring strain which makes him a major doubt. To compound matters, Cheick Tiote is also set to miss out as he continues to be troubled by a calf injury and with James Perch still a doubt with a neck problem, Pardew's resources are stretched to the full.
