A 3-1 defeat away by Napoli in midweek has left Chelsea facing elimination from the UEFA Champions League and has led to reports that Villas-Boas is on the brink of being sacked. The Portuguese is confident that he retains the backing of owner Roman Abramovich, but reports of a dressing room revolt led by senior players have only served to undermine his position. Chelsea are chasing their first Barclays Premier League win in five games, their last league win coming in the middle of January. Draws at Norwich and Swansea, and at home against Manchester United, preceded a 2-0 defeat at Everton in their last match in a sequence which has seen the Blues fall out of the Champions League places. A meeting with Bolton could be just what Villas-Boas needs right now, with Chelsea having won the last eight meetings between the clubs, scoring 25 goals and conceding just four. Bolton might have a FA Cup quarter final assured but remain deep in trouble after rock-bottom Wigan sent Wanderers to a second successive defeat last time out. The Trotters have failed to score in two of their last three but four of their six league victories this season have come on the road.

• Frank Lampard has scored more goals against Bolton than against any other team in the Premier League (11). If Lamps nets on Saturday he will become the first player to score at least 10 Premier League goals in nine successive seasons.
• Bolton have kept just one clean sheet in their last 38 Premier League away games.
