Bolton go in search of back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they entertain out-of-form Newcastle on Boxing Day. The Trotters beat relegation rivals Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, ending a run of five defeats in a row. That victory could breathe new life into their quest to avoid the drop, but Owen Coyle's side are still stuck in the bottom three. A win against the Magpies could lift them out of the drop zone if Wigan and Wolves lose to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.
Newcastle are beginning to look over their shoulders after six games without a win, following their pulsating start to the Premier League season. Their 3-2 home defeat against West Brom on Wednesday means they are now seventh in the table, but manager Alan Pardew is refusing to panic over the recent form. The festive period offers little respite for the North East club, with a trip to Liverpool and a home clash with Manchester United to come after the visit to Bolton.
