It's hard to know which of these two troubled sides have a greater need for victory. Logically of course Blackburn's plight means their very survival hangs on every precious point, but Liverpool's own subplot of recent baffling underachievement means they too can't simply view this game as a pre-Wembley warm-up. Three weeks ago Tuesday's hosts had seemingly given themselves some breathing space as a three-match unbeaten run helped elevate them six points above the drop zone. Three straight defeats later and they've been dragged back into it again. Rovers' recent home form also offers encouragement, with 10 points accumulated from their last six played there, while Liverpool arrive off the back of four away defeats in a row and with that Merseyside FA Cup semi-final showdown looming large.
• Blackburn have picked up just six points from north west derbies, fewer than any other team in the region.
• Liverpool have won just one of their five north west derbies away from home in the Premier League this season.
Blackburn go into the clash with Liverpool with a number of knocks - with Martin Olsson's shoulder injury being the prime concern. He completed the defeat at West Brom, despite the injury, but will be assessed prior to this one. Marcus Olsson could replace David Dunn, who would seem unlikely to earn back-to-back starts having recently returned from injury. Striker Anthony Modeste will be suspended for three games after picking up a straight red card last time out.
With Daniel Agger now back in contention, Kenny Dalglish must decide whether to grant him a starting role or preserve the Dane for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final in mind. Elsewhere, the likes of Andy Carroll and Craig Bellamy will surley come into the reckoning having been benched against Villa. Pepe Reina is still suspended meaning Brazilian Alexander Doni will again deputise.
